Not a cleaned-up, future you. You — as you are, this hour, with everything you did and said and thought today that you hope no one ever learns. HE sees all of it. HE wants you anyway.

We have folded intimacy into activity and called the total a walk with God.
But activity is not intimacy. Attendance is not intimacy. Even ministry is not intimacy.
You may have been a believer a long time. You know the words. You have done the work. And still there is a question you have not said out loud — whether there is more than this, and whether it was ever meant for you.
There is more. It is not further along the shore. It is further out. Everything published here begins with helping you see, and ends in movement — because we cannot change what we cannot yet see, and we cannot speak to what we have not faced.

And Father, before this book belongs to any reader, it belongs to You — so I ask now for every soul who will ever open it: grant each one an audience with You. Meet them in these pages. Bless every hand that carries this book, every heart that shares it, and every intercessor who stands in the gap for another (Ezekiel 22:30).
And for every reader — call them out of the shallows.

Movement one: assurance. Most believers are waiting for a call that has already gone out, and they are waiting because they are listening for an assignment rather than for a Person. This volume settles the question of whether you were called before it touches what you were called to — because a worker who is unsure of the first will not survive the second.

Movement two: readiness. A warning is mercy wearing work clothes. This volume is about what it takes to be ready when the ground is contested — keeping the seed, answering for the hope in you, and knowing the difference between a season that is hard and a season that is a warning.

Movements three and four: promise, then choice. The end of every promise is not the thing promised but the Person promising, and the receiving of it is a decision made again each day. This volume is about refusing the lesser thing you were offered first, and about what it costs to keep choosing the greater one.

Put On HIS Armor
The commissioning. Persecution is not an interruption of the calling; it is the evidence of it. This volume puts on the armor piece by piece and ends where Paul ends — watching thereunto with all perseverance — which is the clause most teaching leaves off, and the one that turns a soldier into a watchman.

Keep HIS Watch
The post, and the capstone of the six. A watchman is not posted for a season but for a watch, and the watch does not end because the night is long. The series closes where 1 Peter closes — sober, vigilant, and held by the God of all grace, who Himself makes you perfect, stablished, strengthened, settled.

Five of these six are still being written
Do not wait. Stand in the gap.
A book that does not exist yet cannot be bought, and we will not pretend otherwise. But it can be carried. The watchman’s work has always been to stand in the gap for what has not happened yet — and a manuscript in progress is exactly that kind of gap.
Each month we name the volume being written and what it needs. You pray it into being. That is the whole invitation, and it costs nothing.
Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time — though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come.

The name
σκοπός
The watchman who sees, and the mark he moves toward.
SKOPOS descends from the verb skopeō — to look, to watch, to consider carefully. It gives us scope, and every -scope built to reveal what the naked eye cannot. It gives us skeptic, one who looks closely before believing.
From that root grow two meanings that turn out to be one. The watcher, posted on a height, who sees what is coming before anyone below. And the mark — the target the archer fixes on, the goal the runner drives toward. The eye that guards and the eye that aims are the same eye.
And the watchman does not only see. He sounds the trumpet. Sight comes first, but the warning is the point of the watch. That is what the tagline means, and it is why this house is named for an office rather than a family.
The watchman
In the Greek Old Testament, skopos is the very word for the watchman God appoints over HIS people.
“Son of man, I have made thee a watchman.” — Ezekiel 3:17The mark
And it is the mark in Paul’s most quoted line of striving — kata skopon diōkō, the goal pressed toward.

The call to watch was never reserved for the ordained. It was given to the whole house.
